The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has acquired four new mobile container x-ray machines to boost its scanning performance in various ports in the country.

BOC in a statement said the x-ray machines will enable non-intrusive detection of smuggled goods in containerized shipments and enhance the bureau’s capability to identify misdeclared, undervalued and undeclared commodities.

Expected to be fully turned over to BOC in November 2021, the machines will be deployed to ports with high-volume scanning operations: Manila International Container Port, Cebu, Subic, and Cagayan de Oro.

BOC said that by utilizing its 124 x-ray machines, it collected P63.426 million in additional duties and taxes and seize approximately P117.394 million worth of smuggled commodities and illegal drugs from January to September 2021.

The additional machines will “ensure the enhancement of the bureau’s operations while improving the country’s revenue collection,” BOC said.

In 2019, it deployed 50 new x-ray machines in various airports and seaports nationwide, including 15 fixed baggage x-ray machines, 25 hand-carried baggage x-ray machines, four mobile baggage x-ray machines, and six portal-type x-ray machines, altogether worth more than P1.2 billion.
