ID-100355607The Bureau of Customs-Manila International Container Port (BOC-MICP) collection district generated P331.89 million in revenue in the first nine months of 2015 derived from the sale of seized illegal shipments.

In September alone, BOC-MICP earned P12.13 million from the auction of seized nine forty-foot and 21 forty-foot containers.

From year to date, 809 containers that could neither be sold through public bidding nor donated to the Department of Social Welfare and Development went through public auction, BOC said in a statement.

The collection district is making record collections from public auctions, according to MICP-Auction and Cargo Disposal Division (MICP-ACDD) chief Gerardo Macatangay.

Records show that annual revenue from auctions in 2010 amounted to P22.2 million, increased to P58.7 million in 2011 then went down to P16.4 million in 2012 before picking up to a total of P25.4 million in 2013.

“When I was appointed in 2014, MICP public auction sales revenues shot up (to) P580.2 million. From 2014 to date, our division has contributed a phenomenal P912 million. We’re not even done with 2015 yet but we’re already at P331.89 million,” Macatangay said.

The MICP-ACDD is set to hold a public auction of 124 containers of imported sugar on October 12, adopting the Sugar Regulatory Authority’s suggested price of P2,033 per bag.

“We are expecting more than P160 million representing proceeds from this auction sale,” Macatangay added.

For his part, Customs commissioner Alberto Lina said: “The bureau is pleased with the strong interest from bidders and the favorable prices we are getting for the goods we auction. We intend to expedite the disposition of forfeited goods to rev up revenues, free up the much-needed space at the ports and contribute to the decongestion drive being undertaken by the Aquino administration.”
