The Jose Panganiban port improvement project has begun.

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and the local government of Camarines Norte on June 19 broke ground for the project, which includes reconstruction of the reinforced concrete wharf and construction of a port operational area.

PPA last January awarded the P543.387-million port improvement contract to MRB II Construction Corp.

Located at Brgy. Osmeña, Jose Panganiban port handles export cargoes, PPA said in a statement.

Before the pandemic, the port processed 8,673 metric tons of foreign cargoes and serviced one foreign non-roll-on/roll-off vessel in 2019.

With the improvement project, PPA said the port is expected to handle 18,516 mt of foreign cargoes and two non-Ro-Ro vessels by 2032.

Speaking in the vernacular, PPA general manager Jay Daniel Santiago said the improved port will be “a big help to the people of Camarines Norte, as it will serve as a logistics hub due to its strategic location in the middle of the Bicol Region and the National Capital Region.”

The port will also allow local products from Camarines Norte to reach other countries, Santiago added.

Local products include coconut and its by-products, iron ore, silica, and copra, among others.
