Isla will remain as chief advisor during the leadership transition
AirAsia Aviation Group Limited (AAAGL) has appointed Suresh Bangah as the new president and general manager of AirAsia Philippines, the company announced on May 26. The appointment follows the retirement of Ricky Isla, who will stay on as chief advisor during the transition.
Bangah is a senior aviation executive with close to three decades of experience. He joined AirAsia in 2003 as a pilot and instructor and later took on senior roles including chief pilot and director of flight operations at AirAsia X, and most recently, group director of flight operations at AAAGL.
The leadership change comes as AirAsia Philippines targets a fleet expansion to 19 aircraft this year. The airline flew nearly 7 million passengers in 2024 and is aiming to sustain a 90% load factor in 2025. The company said the changes are part of a broader growth plan that includes digitizing the travel experience and expanding connectivity to over 130 destinations in the AirAsia network.
“Captain Suresh steps into this role at an important juncture,” said Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia Aviation Group. “His extensive operations experience and commitment to safety and guest-centricity make him well-positioned to lead AirAsia Philippines into its next phase of growth.”
Lingam also acknowledged Isla’s role in steering the airline through the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Under Ricky’s leadership, the airline stabilized operations and restored confidence in the brand,” he said.
Bangah said his priorities include operational improvements, network expansion, and strengthening AirAsia’s presence in the local and regional market. He also noted challenges facing the industry, including supply chain delays, high fuel prices, and rising airport charges, but emphasized the group’s commitment to supporting the country’s aviation and tourism sectors.
“We’re aligned with national efforts to improve connectivity and infrastructure,” Bangah said. “With strong foundations in place, we look forward to advancing ASEAN connectivity while connecting guests to what matters most.
