Cathay Cargo successfully transported 250 ancient Egyptian artifacts weighing over 30 tons from Shanghai to Hong Kong for the upcoming exhibition “Ancient Egypt Unveiled: Treasures from Egyptian Museums” at the Hong Kong Palace Museum.

The artifacts were carried on a Cathay Cargo flight using specialized equipment, including two 20-foot pallets, one oversized pallet, 12 lower-deck pallets, and shock-absorbing dollies. Each piece was handled under Cathay Cargo’s highest standards of care, escorted by an Egyptian courier and supervised by experts in Shanghai.

“This is a wonderful example of how Cathay Cargo helps connect cultures as well as commerce. We are honored to support the transport of these remarkable treasures to Hong Kong,” Dominic Perret, Cathay’s director of cargo, said in a press release.

The project builds on Cathay’s ongoing support for cultural initiatives, including its three-year collaboration with the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority to promote Hong Kong as an East-meets-West hub for international cultural exchange.

“It underscores both our expertise in handling sensitive shipments through our Cathay Secure solution, and our commitment to facilitating Hong Kong’s position as a center for international cultural exchange,” Perret added.

Earlier this year, Cathay Cargo transported terracotta figures and over 200 artifacts from Xi’an to Perth via Hong Kong for the “Terracotta Warriors: Legacy of the First Emperor” exhibition, using its Cathay Expert and Cathay Secure solutions.

The Egyptian artifacts successful transport was made possible through close coordination among Shanghai Airport Authority, customs, ground-handling agents, and Cathay Cargo, which opened a green channel for expedited clearance. The operation included three days of pre-document checks, fast-track screening, and enhanced procedures.

“This shipment demonstrates how our teams in the Chinese Mainland work seamlessly with airports, customs and partners to deliver delicate, high-value goods with precision and care,” Perret said.

Jointly organized by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), the exhibition will run for nine months starting November 20, 2025, showcasing rare artifacts and archaeological discoveries never before seen in Hong Kong. It is the largest, most comprehensive, and longest-running display of ancient Egyptian treasures ever staged in the city.

The SCA, the sole owner and lender of all artifacts, said it is honored to share these treasures with Hong Kong and the world as part of its mission to preserve and promote Egypt’s cultural heritage through international collaboration.
