Mactan-Cebu International Airport’s second parallel runway was officially opened on July 18, according to the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA).
The new runway welcomed its maiden flights with the arrival of flight 7C2177 from Incheon, South Korea and the departure of flight 5J 5108 to Kansai, Japan.
MCIAA general manager Julius G. Neri, Jr. in a statement said the opening of the new runway marks the beginning of enhanced operational efficiency and increased flight capacity for the country’s second busiest international gateway.
“The opening today of the second parallel runway is expected to significantly improve airside capacity, reduce aircraft holding times, and support future growth in passenger and cargo traffic,” Neri said.
The opening of the runway is a significant development in time for MCIAA’s 35th anniversary on July 31, 2025.
Earlier, MCIAA announced that the primary runway was temporarily closed off due to repair works. Neri said repairs on the primary runway should be completed in a year’s time.
The inauguration of the parallel runway earlier this year is a game-changer for Philippine aviation, ensuring that MCIA can accommodate growing air traffic demand, smoother operations as passenger and cargo volumes continue to rise, while strengthening the country’s position as a regional aviation hub.
The runway has a length of 2,560 meters, a perpendicular taxiway length of 237 meters with 23 meters in taxiway width. It will be used when the main runway is closed during emergencies, runway closures, maintenance, etc., while guaranteeing airport operations continue without interruption.
