Cargo volume handled by Cebu ports grew 10.8% in the first seven months of the year with both domestic and international shipments registering increases during the period, according to preliminary data from the Cebu Port Authority (CPA).
Ports under CPA jurisdiction recorded 42.833 million metric tons from January to July, higher than the 38.659 million mt posted in the same period last year.
Of the total, domestic cargoes accounted for 79% or 33.866 million mt, 8.9% up from the 31.086 million mt recorded in January-July 2023.
Foreign cargo volume improved by so much more, up 18.4% to 8.968 million mt from 7.573 million mt year-on-year.
Imports for the first seven months rose 20.7% to 8.119 million mt while exports fell slightly by 0.06% to 849,102 mt.
Container throughput went up 8% to 566,888 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from 524,797 TEUs in January-July last year.
Domestic container volume improved 1.8% year-on-year to 287,150 TEUs while foreign containers climbed 13.7% year-on-year to 270,986 TEUs.
Domestic transshipments, meanwhile, surged 100.6% to 8,752 TEUs from 4,363 TEUs.
Import containers reached 132,170 TEUs from January to July, up 16.6% from 113,313 TEUs last year. Similarly, export containers grew 11% to 138,817 TEUs from 125,093 TEUs last year.
Rolling cargoes reached 1.069 million units, up 11.7% from 957,287 units last year.
Ship calls to Cebu ports in the first seven months of the year advanced 8.6% to 85,936 vessels from 79,128 vessels in the same period last year.
Domestic ship calls, which accounted for the bulk of the total, also rose 8.6% year-on-year to 85,330 while foreign ship calls grew 14% year-on-year to 606 vessels.
Passenger traffic saw a 13.4% increment to 12.263 million in January-July from 10.813 million in the same period last year.
CPA has jurisdiction over the Cebu baseport and its subports. Cebu baseport is composed of Cebu International Port and the domestic zone, while subports include the ports of Mandaue, Danao, Sta. Fe, Toledo and Argao. – Roumina Pablo
