E-commerce drives PH logistics growth, says FedEx

E-commerce is driving logistics growth in the Philippines, according to Maribeth Espinosa, managing director of FedEx Philippines.

The express company is in particular seeing more shipments in the runup to the holidays — “a big season” for FedEx, with apparel in high demand online.

Describing e-commerce as “one of those rapidly changing environments”, Espinosa, who led the company’s first-ever media tour of its Clark gateway on September 27, said the company is “adapting to the needs of e-commerce. Semiconductor still plays a role. Before you get into the internet, you need the computers and laptops that they produce.”

Revenue in the e-commerce market in the Philippines is projected to reach US$14.66 billion in 2024 and $24.01 billion in 2029, according to Statista.

Espinosa said FedEx also sees the Philippines as a growth market, noting its strategic location. “Geographically, it has access points to the different ASEAN regions. That is one, and we also look at the talent pool when we invest in a certain market,” she explained.

“We know that there is capacity and room to grow and we’ve seen that and we’re trying to help also those SMEs (small and medium enterprises) grow and we are seeing them growing so we know that there is business coming up for us,” she said.

“We want to also continue to embrace technological advancement and innovation because this is important for our customers, especially those that are in the e-commerce industries. We continue to look forward to increasing our capacity and expanding because we also introduced the freight business in our category offerings for FedEx.,” Espinosa added.

FedEx is expanding its gateway in Clark to more than double the size of its current facility under an agreement it signed with Clark International Airport operator Luzon International Premiere Airport Development in July 2024. The expansion would see the establishment of additional facilities, such as aprons and taxiways, within the airport premises.

The FedEx Clark Gateway facility is capable of sorting up to 9,000 parcels per hour. The 27,239-square-meter facility is designed to meet the growing demand for cold-chain logistics and e-commerce in the region.

Spanning 630 square meters, the facility’s dedicated freight-handling area supports bulk shipments and large items, catering to the rising needs of e-commerce.

There are at least 46 inbound and outbound flights weekly at the Clark gateway. The fleet is composed of Boeing 777 and 767 freighters, including 157 vehicles. – Michael Barcas
