FastCat, the flagship brand of Archipelago Philippine Ferries Corp. (APFC), is opening a new route connecting Zamboanga and Basilan beginning October 22.

The new Zamboanga-Basilan route will provide an access to Basilan and the major parts of Mindanao, connecting people and businesses from nearby islands, APFC said in a statement.

FastCat will be using its roll-on/roll-off passenger ship M11, which will have three two-hour trips daily.

APFC noted that with the opening of the new route, “FastCat continues to help boost local businesses and tourism to uplift the lives of Filipinos and contribute to the overall economic development of the country.”

Zamboanga, located at the tip of the peninsula, is essentially rooted in agriculture with farming and fishing as the main economic activities of families. APFC added that transporting and/or exchanging goods to nearby islands such as Basilan, known as the “Treasure Islands of the Southern Seas,” Sulu and Tawi-Tawi will create livelihood for the locals.

Moreover, APFC said Basilan has some excellent beaches that offer fine white sands and turquoise water that are great for swimming.

Visitors can also enjoy a distinctive cultural tourist experience in Zamboanga City with the merging of western, Spanish and indigenous influences in its architecture and people.

FastCat’s routes currently connects Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao through its major island pairs such as: Batangas-Calapan, Bulalacao-Caticlan, Dumangas-Banago/Bacolod, Dumaguete-Dapitan, San Carlos-Toledo, Cebu-Tubigon, Matnog-Dapdap, and Liloan-Surigao.

The domestic carrier targets having 30 vessels by 2030 to cover more routes and continue its expansion program to reach the farthest islands of the Philippines.
