President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. inspected the recently-completed rehabilitation of Marawi port in Lanao del Sur on June 23.
The P261.5-million rehabilitation is part of government projects aimed at restoring connectivity and accelerating economic recovery in Marawi City nearly seven years after the 2017 siege.
The rehabilitated Marawi port features an 8,000-square-meter backup area, a single-storey passenger terminal building with a seating capacity of 132, a one-storey fish port, berthing facilities for fast craft vessels, and a roll-on/roll- off ramp, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) said in a statement.
The port project is spearheaded by PPA under the Marawi Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Peacebuilding Program of the Office of the Presidential Adviser for Marawi Rehabilitation and Development (formerly known as Task Force Bangon Marawi). PPA had bid out the project in 2021.
Prior to the project, local residents relied only on a basic causeway for their transportation and fishing needs.
With the port now nearing full operation, PPA said it is expected to facilitate smoother movement of goods, passengers, and services across Marawi City and surrounding communities, especially via Lake Lanao—the second-largest lake in the Philippines.
PPA general manager Jay Daniel Santiago noted the Marawi port project is part of the agency’s wider effort to enhance access and economic opportunities in underserved areas.
“We at the Philippine Ports Authority are honored to contribute to the rehabilitation of Marawi City through this project. We encourage the communities around Lake Lanao to maximize the use of this facility,” Santiago said.
