Tecon Santos, the largest container terminal in South America managed by Santos Brasil at the Port of Santos, now operates with an upgraded terminal operating system (TOS), OPUS.

Developed by South Korean company CyberLogitec, OPUS uses advanced algorithms to enhance yard organization and ship planning, promising a more efficient service to clients.

The adoption of OPUS is part of Tecon Santos’ effort to modernize and streamline container operations, aiming to elevate service levels, planning, and overall productivity, the company said.

The OPUS TOS software was chosen for its seamless integration with new technologies, enabling the use of optical character recognition (OCR), remotely controlled machinery, digital twin simulations, and artificial intelligence. It consolidates operations with real-time data, providing accurate information to the firm’s operational control center.

Tecon Santos is undergoing an expansion and modernization project, with a target capacity increase from 2.4 million twenty-equivalent units (TEU)/year to 3 million TEUs/year by 2031. The transition to OPUS began at Tecon Vila do Conde in April 2021, involving training for teams from both terminals.

The TOS change is part of an investment exceeding (Brazilian Real) R$40 million (about $8 million), dedicated to replacing software and equipment. The objective is to leverage digital technologies in terminal planning and operations, enhancing efficiency to meet the growing demand.

Simultaneously, Santos Brasil is investing R$120 million (about $24 million) in expansion works, and the acquisition of new equipment at Vila do Conde, aiming to increase the terminal’s capacity by almost 40%, from 217,000 TEUs/year to 300 TEUs/year.

Ricardo Miranda, chief technology officer at Santos Brasil, highlighted the benefits of this modern management tool, saying, “It is a tool that allows for more modern management of the full operation, integrating digital technologies, machinery, and people. We have greater agility and precision in daily decision-making, reducing waste and increasing the terminal’s efficiency.”
