One economic zone was created and another expanded by President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., a move welcomed by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA).

The developments are expected to bring in P1.641 billion worth of investments.

Marcos signed Proclamation No. 200 on April 14 creating and designating several parcels of land with an aggregate area of 17,165 square meters (sqm) located at Lacson Street in Banago, Bacolod City to be known as Robinsons Cyberpark Bacolod.

Proclamation No. 402, signed on April 19, on the other hand, designates several parcels of land with an aggregate area of 405,739 sqm located at Barangays Santiago, Luta Sur, and Bagong Pook in Malvar, Batangas for the expansion of Lima Technology Center–Special Economic Zone (SEZ), a mixed-use development spanning portions of Lipa and Malvar.

Of the P1.641 billion worth of investments the ecozones are expected to attract, P777.350 million will be accounted for Robinsons Cyberpark and P864.224 million by Lima Technology Center SEZ, PEZA in a statement said.

PEZA director general Tereso Panga said the two new ecozones “will certainly bolster and spread economic growth outside the National Capital Region.”

“And with our 10% target growth for 2023, we remain on track in our goal of establishing at least 30 ecozones every year that create centers of economic progress outside the National Capital Region to spur countryside development,” Panga added.

As of April 19, 2023, PEZA has 20 pending ecozones to be proclaimed by the President. These include 11 information technology centers, eight in manufacturing, and one agro-industrial ecozone.
