Around 500 air service agreements were finalized following a week of intense negotiations during the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) 2024 Air Services Negotiation (ICAN) event held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia recently.
The bulk of negotiations centered on establishing new air routes, expanding capacity, and modernizing existing pacts to meet present market demands.
ICAN has facilitated more than 5,000 air service agreements globally since its inception in 2008.
The agreements are crucial for the following:
- Opening new air routes between countries
- Expanding passenger and cargo capacity
- Fostering competition and market access, and
- Supporting economic development via enhanced connectivity
ICAO Council president Salvatore Sciacchitano said: “The substantial outcomes of ICAN 2024 demonstrate the aviation sector’s continued commitment to enhancing global connectivity.”
He added: “Each agreement signed here opens new pathways for economic growth and international cooperation.”
There were 594 bilateral meetings held during the five-day event, attended by 590 delegates from 80 member-states.
ICAN was hosted by Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport, and marked the event’s return to Asia after seven years.
The next ICAN event is set to take place in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic in December 2025.
