Aboitiz InfraCapital, Inc. (AIC) has upgraded most of the runway surfaces at Laguindingan International Airport (LIA) to enhance overall infrastructure quality and improve passenger travel experience by supporting safer and more reliable flight operations.

The regular rehabilitation works, which include runway repainting, inspection activities, rubber removal, and crack repair, are focused on maintaining optimal runway surface conditions at the country’s seventh-busiest gateway and Mindanao’s second-busiest airport, AIC said in a statement.

“As the operator of Laguindingan International Airport, we take a proactive approach to maintaining and improving critical airside infrastructure. These runway enhancements reflect our ongoing responsibility to ensure that the airport remains capable of supporting current operations while preparing for future demand,” AIC vice president and head of airports Rafael Aboitiz said.

AIC said the maintenance works were carried out in coordination with aviation authorities to ensure that activities align with national safety and operational standards while minimizing disruption to airport operations.

“Sustaining airport infrastructure is an ongoing process that relies on cooperation between regulators and airport operators. Continued coordination across stakeholders helps ensure that facilities like Laguindingan remain well-maintained and capable of supporting the region’s growing connectivity needs,” Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines director general Raul Del Rosario said.

For passengers, AIC said these technical improvements at LIA translate into smoother and safer takeoffs and landings, as well as more reliable airport services.

The runway upgrades form part of AIC’s broader efforts to strengthen airport infrastructure across its growing network of gateways in the Philippines.

Alongside LIA, located in Misamis Oriental province in the Northern Mindanao region, AIC Airports also operates the Mactan-Cebu International Airport and Bohol-Panglao International Airport, both in Central Visayas.

AIC was awarded the concession contracts for LIA and BPIA in 2024. In October the same year, the company also assumed full ownership of Aboitiz GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation, the developer and operator of the Mactan-Cebu airport.

Through these airport public-private partnerships, AIC said it aims to strengthen domestic and regional connectivity, support local tourism, and contribute to economic development by enabling more efficient movement of people and commerce – connecting people, places, and possibilities.

Starting 2025 and in partnership with relevant local and national government units, AIC said it has begun introducing modernization initiatives aimed at further elevating the passenger experience and strengthening the global competitiveness of Philippine airports.
