Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT) welcomed the start of Mediterranean Shipping Co.’s (MSC) new HADRIA service with the maiden call of MSC ANNICK on April 9.

The HADRIA service makes regular weekly calls, strengthening AGCT’s network and enhancing options for regional shippers looking for reliable, efficient access to global markets, International Container Terminal Services, Inc (ICTSI) said in a statement.

AGCT is ICTSI’s operation at the Port of Rijeka in Croatia.

The service’s rotation includes Abu Kir (Alexandria, Egypt), Trieste, Koper, Rijeka, Gioia Tauro, and back to Abu Kir.

MSC’s standalone service marks a significant development for North Adriatic trade connectivity, offering direct weekly connections to the Far East via Malta, according to ICTSI.

MSC last February started its standalone East/West network, which includes five trades with 34 loops incorporating seven loops for Asia North Europe, six loops for Asia Mediterranean, four loops for Asia North America West Coast, six loops for Asia North America East Coast and 11 loops for the Transatlantic Network.

The standalone service replaced the 2M VSA agreement that MSC had with Danish shipping giant Maersk on East/West trades.

“With the breakup of the 2M Alliance, we are excited to welcome the new standalone MSC HADRIA service,” AGCT chief executive officer Emannuel Papagiannakis said.

“We expect shippers to embrace the new service, as well as MSC’s global connectivity and continued commitment to Rijeka as a major gateway for the Balkans and Central Europe,” he added.

With this new addition, AGCT said it continues to expand its portfolio of direct services, supporting the increasing demand for sustainable and cost-effective logistics solutions in the Adriatic region.

In March 2011, ICTSI forged a 30-year strategic partnership with Luka Rijeka D.D. for the operation, management, and development of AGCT at the Port of Rijeka, Croatia’s main seaport.
