The First Philippine Industrial Park (FPIP) in Batangas is considering a major expansion that will include adding residential and commercial areas around the manufacturing hub, according to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

In a statement, the DTI said FPIP disclosed proposed expansions such as research and development and data centers to attract high-value manufacturing industries in the country after a recent meeting with company representatives.

Established in 1996, FPIP is a joint venture between Sumitomo Corporation and local conglomerate First Philippine Holdings.

Additionally, Sumitomo Corporation is exploring the development of residential and commercial areas around the park “to enhance the lives of employees and the surrounding community,” DTI said in a statement.

The DTI also mentioned that Sumitomo is considering taking over the operations and maintenance of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 or MRT-3 through a concession framework, potentially improving public transportation efficiency.

In addition to its infrastructure projects, Sumitomo Corporation has a long track record in railway development and railcar exports.

The company’s involvement in key projects, such as the Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and 2 and the MRT-3, has substantially improved urban mobility and helped reduce air pollution in Metro Manila.
