The Bureau of Customs-Ninoy Aquino International Airport (BOC-NAIA) intercepted P111.11 million worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride, locally known as shabu, at the DHL cargo warehouse in Pasay on September 26.

The illegal drugs were hidden within wax used in five handmade paintings. They weighed 16.34 kilograms and originated from Mexico, BOC said in a statement.

The package was consigned to a recipient in San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan.

This marks a new method of drug smuggling involving the concealment of meth in wax, the BOC said. No arrests were made during the shipment inspection.

The confiscated drugs were turned over to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) for further investigation. Legal proceedings are underway for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act or Republic Act (RA) No. 9165 and the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (RA 10863).

The BOC-NAIA, PDEA, and the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group jointly conducted the operation.

Customs commissioner Bienvenido Rubio commended the vigilance of BOC-NAIA under District collector Atty. Yasmin Mapa, stating the bureau will continue to enhance border controls to combat evolving smuggling techniques.
