The Bureau of Customs-Ninoy Aquino International Airport (BOC-NAIA) seized 14,396 grams of shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride,) worth P97.89 million on January 16 at NAIA Terminal 3.
The illegal drugs were discovered during an inspection involving x-ray scanning, K9 assistance, and a thorough physical examination, the BOC said in a statement.
The contraband was concealed inside the luggage of two South African nationals who had arrived from Dubai. The operation was conducted in close coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group.
Following the seizure, the suspects and the confiscated drugs were turned over to PDEA for further investigation and legal proceedings for violations of Republic Act (RA) No. 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, as amended and RA No. 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
Customs Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio commended the BOC-NAIA’s efforts, saying, “Your continuous dedication in enhancing the border control measures at the airport underscores our commitment in ensuring the safety of the Filipino people. We will remain vigilant and proactive in our efforts against all forms of illegal trade.”
BOC-NAIA, led by District Collector Atty. Yasmin Mapa stated that it continues to work closely with partner agencies to “implement robust measures” against the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband into the country.
