The Bureau of Customs (BOC) recently seized fifteen containers of alleged smuggled refined sugar at the Manila International Container Port (MICP).
The shipments came from Hong Kong and were misdeclared as 100,000 kilograms of silica sand. They arrived in MICP on May 27, BOC said in a statement.
The shipment was consigned to Smile Agri Ventures Inc.
Customs Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio Rubio said the smuggled sugar was found after being subjected to spot-check examinations by Customs authorities and other partner agencies on July 11 following the issuance of Pre-Lodgement Orders (PLOs).
“The PLOs were requested based on information that the shipment contains agricultural products, misdeclared and undeclared goods,” Rubio said.
BOC said further investigations are underway for the institution of appropriate administrative proceedings against the subject shipment and persons involved, including possible filing of criminal cases for violation of Republic Act 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
The smuggled sugar is subject to the issuance of warrants of seizure and detention, the BOC said.
