The Borongan Airport is facing development based on a recent memorandum of agreement signed between the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and the Borongan City government in Eastern Samar.

Under the MOA, the Borongan City government proposes to undertake and finance various development and maintenance projects at the airport to accommodate the growing number of passengers and foster economic growth in the area, CAAP said in a statement.

These projects include the construction of a new passenger terminal building and other essential infrastructure.

The June 13 signing was attended by CAAP director general Captain Manuel Antonio Tamayo and Borongan City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda.

In his speech during the MOA signing, Tamayo called the agreement a “testament to our dedication and joint efforts to improve and develop the airport and would hopefully serve as a blueprint for our continuous cooperation going forward.

Agda, for his part, said the MOA signing gives Borongan residents hope as it will pave the way for future economic development not just in the city but for the entire Samar region.

Borongan Airport is a community airport with a pre-departure area that has a seating capacity of 75.

In December 2022, commercial flights resumed at the airport with Philippine Airlines launching its inaugural Manila-Cebu-Borongan service.
