Borongan Airport officially opened its new departure terminal building on June 19.

The official inauguration follows the signing of a memorandum of agreement between Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and the Borongan City government on June 13 to facilitate the development and maintenance of Borongan Airport.

The terminal building is one of the maintenance and development projects for Borongan Airport that the city government has undertaken and turned over to CAAP. The old terminal building will still be used as a passenger arrival terminal area.

CAAP director general Manuel Antonio Tamayo thanked the city government for the project and noted his optimism on collaborative efforts by the national and local governments in developing aviation infrastructure to foster economic growth and national development.

The community airport, which serves the general area of Borongan and other municipalities in Eastern Samar, opened to commercial operations last December 2022.

Borongan City Airport flight operations chairman Ruperto Ambil III said the airport had a total passenger traffic of 4,022 and welcomed 86 flights from December 2022 to May 2023.

The inauguration was also attended by CAAP Chief Finance Officer Marianne Raymundo, CAAP Deputy Director General Atty. Danjun G. Lucas, CAAP Assistant Director General II Col. Valentino Dionela, CAAP Officer-in-Charge of the Corporate Planning Office Atty. Edeliza Iruguin, and Atty. Anna Castigador. Guests included Consul General Hideki Yamaji of the Consulate General of Japan in Cebu, Borongan City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan C. Agda, Vice Mayor Emmanuel Tiu Sonco, Eastern Samar Governor Ben P. Evardone, members of the City Council of Borongan, and other local agency officials.
