The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) on August 5 inaugurated the newly expanded Cantilan port in Surigao del Sur.

The P198.489-million expansion project includes extension of the reinforced concrete wharf by 60 meters, reclamation of 5,676 square meters of backup area, and installation of a port lighting system.

Cantilan port can now handle double its monthly cargo volume or up to 60,000 bags of cement shipments, PPA said in a statement.

The expansion is seen to bring more convenience to port users while facilitating more opportunities for livelihood and maritime trading in Surigao Del Sur and its neighboring areas, PPA added.

During the inauguration, PPA general manager Jay Daniel Santiago said the agency has more in store for the CARAGA Region as the agency eyes completion of other projects, such as those in Masao, Nasipit and Lipata as well as the Jubang Cruise Terminal, a dedicated cargo terminal, and the Port of Donya Helene in Siargao.
