The Cathay Group will invest more than HK$100 billion ($12.8 billion) in the next seven years as part of its strategy to elevate its customer experience, and strengthen Hong Kong’s international aviation hub status.

As part of the Three Runway System, major investments will go to Cathay’s fleet, cabin products, lounges, and digital and sustainability leadership in Hong Kong.

“With the Three-Runway System soon to propel Hong Kong’s aviation sector into a new age, the coming years are going to be an incredibly exciting time for Hong Kong and for Cathay with ample new opportunities to grow,” Patrick Healy, Cathay Group chairman, said in a statement.

He added the substantial investments further demonstrate Cathay’s “unwavering commitment to fostering Hong Kong’s ongoing economic development.”

The investment includes purchase of 30 Airbus A330-900 aircraft with the right to acquire an additional 30 more aircraft in the future. The new widebody planes are expected to be delivered from 2028.

Cathay now has over 100 new-generation aircraft in the pipeline, with the right to purchase an additional 80 planes. The orders cover narrowbody, regional widebody, long-haul widebody, and large freighter aircraft.

The modernized fleet will not only take the airline to the next level, their enhanced fuel-efficiency will provide an important role in cutting carbon emissions, helping Cathay attain its carbon net-zero by 2050 goal.

New cabin products to be launched in the next three years include the all-new Aria Suite, Premium Economy, and refreshed Economy for its redesigned Boeing 777-300ER aircraft; a new First class experience in its 777-9s; and flat-bed Business class in A330 aircraft.

Complimentary Wi-Fi will also be offered in Business class and to Diamond members soon.

Newly-designed flagship lounges will be launched in Hong Kong, Beijing, and a first-ever lounge in New York.
