The Cebu Port Authority (CPA) has completed the P80.8-million repair and expansion of the reinforced concrete deck at berths 29 and 30 of Cebu Port, providing additional berthing space for tramp vessels in the city’s baseport.

The berth expansion, located behind the Malacañan sa Sugbo area, is one of the key infrastructure projects funded locally and implemented by CPA to address the needs of Cebu port users, the port authority said in a statement.

CPA said the expanded berthing space, which was launched on December 9, will help ease vessel traffic and reduce or even eliminate vessel waiting time.

The port can accommodate two conventional cargo vessels at any given time. In a year, it can accommodate about 240 vessels with an estimated 400,000 metric tons of bulk and break bulk cargoes. These cargoes include rice, cement, wheat, animal feeds and other prime commodities.

CPA noted the berth expansion can translate to increased revenue for the port.

In a related development, CPA reported the completion of nine repair and rehabilitation projects of port facilities damaged during the onslaught of Typhoon Odette late last year. Five on-going repair projects, meanwhile, are set to be completed by the first quarter of 2023.

As part of government’s recovery efforts from the impacts of Odette, CPA has allocated P244.8 million for the repair and rehabilitation of eight CPA-managed port passenger terminal facilities and six berthing facilities.

“It is undeniable that the Port of Cebu has endured the impacts of Typhoon Odette, but we are very happy that CPA was able to bounce back and build better to deliver safe, effective and efficient port services to our local and international port stakeholders,” CPA acting deputy general manager Glenn Castillo said.

To mark this milestone, CPA on December 9 also held a blessing and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Port of Punta Engaño, Lapu-lapu City. The port of Punta Engaño is one of the hardest-hit port facilities and suffered major damage in the wake of Odette.
