Cebu ports handle 10.7% more cargo in 1H

Cebu ports handled 10.7% more cargo in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year, preliminary data from the Cebu Port Authority (CPA) showed.

Ports under CPA’s jurisdiction processed 36.219 million metric tons (mt) in January to June vis-a-vis the 32.717 million mt posted year-on-year.

Of the total, domestic cargoes accounted for 79.3% while the rest were foreign cargoes.

Domestic cargoes increased 8.5% in the first semester to 28.726 million mt from 26.476 million mt in the first half of 2023.

Foreign cargoes likewise improved 20.1% to 7.494 million mt from 6.240 million mt as both imports and exports posted increases.

Imports grew 22% year-on-year to 6.728 million mt while exports rose 4.1% year-on-year to 765,674 mt.

Container traffic in the first half of 2024 dropped 5.6% to 478,003 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from 452,668 TEUs in the first half of last year.

Domestic boxes declined 1.3% to 240,639 TEUs from 243,775 TEUs. Foreign containers, on the other hand, grew 12.1% to 229,666 TEUs from 204,870 TEUs.

Domestic transshipments also increased 91.3% to 7,698 TEUs from 4,023 TEUs.

Import boxes saw 15.1% growth to 112,532 TEUs while exports rose 9.4% to 117,134 TEUs.

Shipcalls to Cebu ports were 7.3% higher in the first half of 2024 at 73,266 from 68,285 in the same semester in 2023. Domestic shipcalls, which account for bulk of the total, saw a 7.3% increment to 72,747 while foreign shipcalls grew 12.3% to 519.

Passenger traffic recorded a double-digit increase of 16.5% in the first half to 10.483 million from 8.995 million in the same period last year.

Rolling cargoes, which were all domestic, likewise improved 12.5% to 911,915 units from 810,496 units last year.

CPA’s jurisdiction is composed of the Cebu baseport and its subports that are strategically located in different points of Cebu. Cebu baseport is composed of Cebu International Port and the domestic zone, while subports include the ports of Mandaue, Danao, Sta. Fe, Toledo and Argao.
