China will construct the world’s largest airport within the next five years, Chinese media reported.

The planned US$4.8-billion airport in Daxing, located between Beijing and Langfang in Hebei Province, will have nine runways and handle 130 million passengers and 5.5 million tons of freight per year.

The yet unnamed airport will have a land area of 2,680 hectares and a completion date of late 2017.

It is seen to compete with Incheon International Airport for the title of top regional hub.

The Chinese government came up with the plan because Beijing Capital International Airport, the world’s second largest airport, has reached its maximum capacity for passengers and cargo.
