The Cebu Port Authority (CPA) broke ground for the P109.3 million expansion of the roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) ramp at the Port of Kawit in Medellin, Cebu on December 1.
The project, which includes construction of a reinforced concrete deck, aims to provide additional docking facilities to accommodate more ro-ro and conventional vessels at the port, providing a secure mooring structure during adverse weather conditions, CPA said in a statement.
Currently, CPA said the Port of Medellin caters to a single shipping company managing the Kawit route to neighboring islands such as Santa Fe and Masbate.
Upon completion, the expanded facility will benefit sugarcane planters in Bogo and Medellin, reducing transportation costs and travel time. Additionally, it aligns with the logistical requirements of the forthcoming Medellin Airport and the proposed Northern Cebu Economic Zone in Medellin.
CPA anticipates the expansion project will stimulate Medellin’s tourism sector, serving as a gateway to Bantayan Island, one of Cebu’s premier beach destinations.
