Domestic air cargo traffic in the Philippines jumped 28.4% to 72.521 million kilograms in the first quarter of 2025 from 56.477 million kg in the same quarter last year, according to latest statistics from the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB).
Of the eight reporting airlines in CAB’s list, six posted year-on-year increases while two recorded declines in January to March 2025.
Cebu Pacific Air continued to handle the most cargo during the first quarter, accounting for 46.6% or 33.821 million kg. This was 48% higher than the 22.829 million kg the low-cost carrier handled in the first quarter of last year.
Still in second place was PAL Express, handling 30.8% or 22.343 million kg, an increment of 3.7% from last year’s 21.539 million kg.
Up one rank to third was Philippine Airlines, which saw a 101.9% surge in volume to 8.176 million kg from 4.049 million kg last year, the highest growth among those in the CAB list. The flag carrier accounted for 11.3% of the total in the first quarter of this year.
Down one place to fourth was AirAsia Philippines with 4.484 million kg or 6.2% of the total. This was, however, down 3.2% from the 4.630 million kg the carrier handled last year.
Remaining in fifth was boutique airline AirSwift, handling 2.5% or 1.847 million kg, an increase of 13.8% from 1.623 million kg previously.
Also still ranked sixth was charter airline Island Aviation with 1.2% or 848,234 kg, 3% higher than 823,566 kg last year.
Cargo airline Seair International, which handled 9.7% more at 597,107 kg from 544,351 kg, was also unmoved at seventh place.
Cebgo, meanwhile, remained at eight with 405,807 kg, 7.1% less than the 436,787 kg it handled in the first quarter of last year.
Boutique airline Sunlight Express Airways, which recorded 2,385 kg in the first quarter of last year, did not have any volume report for the first quarter of this year.
In terms of passengers, Cebu Pacific, PALEx, PAL, AirAsia, AirSwift, Island Aviation, Cebgo, Sunlight, and Royal Air Charter Service Inc. handled 8.514 million in the first quarter, up 14.4% from 7.442 million in the same quarter last year. – Roumina Pablo
