The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has partnered with the Provincial Government of Albay to upgrade two seaports in the municipality of Bacacay.

Transport Undersecretary for Maritime Elmer Francisco Sarmiento and Albay Governor Atty. Edcel “Grex” Lagman signed a memorandum of agreement that allocates P20 million for the repair and rehabilitation of the Cawayan and Pili ports.

Sarmiento acknowledged the initiative led by Albay First District Representative Edcel Lagman, emphasizing that the DOTr’s port projects will positively impact the economy and tourism of the two towns and the province.

“They (ports) facilitate trade and economic growth for the barangays and towns, and also the eco-tourism promotion of the province,” said Sarmiento.

Lagman expressed gratitude to the DOTr for enhancing existing ports in the province, foreseeing benefits for the local communities.

“It will really help the two barangays that will be the areas wherein the ports will be improved. These will be used for fishing activities and even our eco-tourism when the day comes that our ports in Albay are more integrated,” Lagman said in a statement.

Various ports in Quezon and Albay will also be developed following the January signing of a memorandum of agreement between the DOTr, Department of Public Works and Highways-Quezon 1st District, and Albay local government units.

The MOA covers two port development projects in Albay—Baybay port in Malinao and Sogod port in Tiwi—and improvement of Burdeos port in Quezon province.
