The Department of Transportation (DOTr), through the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), has asked local airlines to provide free transport of relief goods to areas affected by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu on September 30.

In an advisory, CAB said the initiative aims to “support ongoing humanitarian relief operations by allocating available cargo space” in the carriers’ aircraft, subject to the airlines’ safety and operational limitations, as well airlines’ procedures.

The request follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to all government agencies to work together and fast track the delivery of assistance to Filipinos affected by the earthquake.

Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez thanked Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia for supporting the initiative.

Nagpapasalamat tayo sa ating local airlines na nakiki-isa sa layunin nating mapabilis ‘yung paghatid ng tulong sa mga naapektuhan ng lindol. Dahil dito, kahit papaano ay mabawasan man lang ‘yung paghihirap  ng ating mga kababayan,” Lopez said in a statement.

The advisory, dated October 1, took effect immediately and will be in force for 30 days, unless sooner lifted or extended as may be necessary.
