Transport Secretary Jaime Bautista has tested positive for COVID-19 and is now in isolation, the Office of the Press Secretary announced on July 22.

Bautista was confirmed to have been infected with COVID after an RT-PCR (reverse transcription– polymerase chain reaction) test, whose result was released on July 21, Malacañang said in a press release quoting a Department of Transportation (DOTr) statement.

The test result came four days before the first State of the Nation Address of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday, July 25. It is now doubtful whether Bautista will have recovered by then to attend the event.

Bautista is now in isolation and is exhibiting mild symptoms of headache and cough.

“Secretary Bautista continues to perform his duties, and is in constant communication with his staff,” DOTr said.

Bautista, 64, was appointed by Marcos to head the DOTr days before the President was sworn into office on June 30.
