The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the local government of Lavezares in Northern Samar have signed a memorandum of agreement for the construction and development of San Agustin port.

Signed on July 22 by Transport undersecretary for maritime Elmer Francisco Sarmiento and Lavezares mayor Edito Saludaga, the agreement aims to “bridge the gap in mobility and connectivity across the municipality and will improve comfort while increasing tourism and economic growth”, DOTr said in a statement.

Sarmiento in a text message to PortCalls said the P25-million San Agustin port project will be funded by this year’s DOTr’s budget.

“This will open up and promote tourism in the islands of Lavezares and it will also greatly benefit the fishing industry in the region, as well as commerce and economic growth of the municipality,” Sarmiento said.

Salugada, for his part, said the San Agustin port project will improve transportation, tourism, and connectivity to nearby municipalities and islands.

“I’m very thankful the DOTr help us in this project seaport,” Salugada said.

He noted that Lavezares, among all the municipalities in Northern Samar, has the longest coast line totaling 68 kilometers, and also includes many islands.

Lavezares is also the jump off point for the number one tourist spot in our province, the Biri Rock Formation.
