Atty. Hector Villacorta, Department of Transportation (DOTr) assistant secretary, has been named officer-in-charge of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) by Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista.

Through a special order, Villacorta will take over the position vacated by Jose Art Tugade effective June 1.

Tugade on May 22 announced he was stepping down as LTO chief after seven months in his post to give Bautista a free hand to choose “who he can work best with”, citing that their “methods to achieve that success differ.”

“Asec. Villacorta will be the LTO OIC while waiting for permanent appointment by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.,” Bautista announced during the turnover at the LTO, while expressing gratitude to Tugade for his accomplishments during his seven-month tenure.

Villacorta assured Bautista that the LTO will continue with its mandate in providing excellent service to the Filipino people by focusing on critical issues, including the issuance of driver’s license and vehicle plates.

“This is not just a transition but a continuation of the efforts done by the LTO all these many decades,” said Villacorta.

Villacorta was formerly chief of staff of Senator Vicente Sotto III, and was a former Commission on Appointments secretary during the terms of Senate Presidents Aquilino Pimentel III and Sotto.

He was appointed as DOTr assistant secretary for communications and commuter affairs in January 2023.

A practicing lawyer, Villacorta was a product of the University of Santo Tomas Law in 1971 and Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
