The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has started the first phase of civil works for a new bypass road leading to Calbayog Airport.

The first phase involves construction of a two-lane, 6.7-meter wide paved road spanning a total of 259.5 meters, 719.9-meter long riprap, and the installation of 27 solar LED lights, costing P31.76-million, DPWH said in a statement.

The entire road project will be 1.19 kilometers long when completed, with a 1,270-lineal meter drainage structure and 8,128 square meters of slope protection.

Scope of works include a 385-meter embankment and 44 reinforced concrete pipe culverts to allow water to flow freely, given that the area is situated along a rice field.

DPWH said this multi-year project will serve as the main road for locals and tourists once a portion of Daang Maharlika, which is part of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) jurisdiction, is closed.

The road begins from Barangay Trinidad connecting the diversion road in Barangay Cagsalaosao, Calbayog City, Samar.

Implemented by DPWH Samar First District Engineering Office, the project is seen to improve the socio-economic status in the area and boost tourism industry in Western Samar. CAAP inaugurated in May 2021 the newly improved and modernized Calbayog Airport, which can now handle 450 passengers and jet aircraft operations.
