The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has outlined efforts to cut transport and logistics costs in order to transform the country into a premier logistics hub in Asia.

Trade undersecretary Jean Pacheco outlined their strategy to streamline logistics processes during the recently concluded Supply Chain Management Association of the Philippines (SCMAP) Supply Chain Conference 2024.

The strategy includes continued implementation of the executive order disallowing the charge of pass-through fees, and pushing for a bill lowering international shipping charges as well as the adoption of the e-airway bill.

Pacheco also announced the development of a private sector-led National Logistics Strategy and a National Logistics Investments Plan that aim to attract more investments in logistics infrastructure. This is seen to improve the efficiency and competitiveness of the Philippines’ supply chain.

In addition, efforts are underway to create a Logistics Industry TVET Board in collaboration with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

Pacheco acknowledged the vital role played  by private sector associations such as the SCMAP in navigating the complexities of the supply chain.

She revealed plans for a tripartite partnership with SCMAP and the Philippine Retailers Association to develop a comprehensive job blueprint for the wholesale and retail trade sectors.

DTI advances direct connections between farmers and institutional buyers, as witnessed by the Three-Year Food Logistics Action Agenda, an end-to-end supply chain platform developed by InsightSCS through USAID’s Strengthening Private Enterprise for the Digital Economy.

Acting Trade Secretary Cristina Roque expressed her support for the Initiatives, saying these are pivotal in driving the country’s overall economic growth.
