President-elect Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. has selected former Philippine Airlines (PAL) president Jaime J. Bautista as the new secretary of the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

Incoming Executive Secretary Vic Rodriguez on June 23 said Bautista has accepted the offer to head the transport department.

Bautista will replace Arthur Tugade, who has been DOTr chief since 2016.

Bautista was president and chief operating officer (COO) of PAL until his retirement in 2019. He was with the flag carrier for 26 years, of which he was president and COO for 13 years.

Bautista also held various executive positions in other businesses under the Lucio Tan Group of Companies, including Macroasia Corp., Macroasia Services Corp., Macroasia Airport Services Corp., Macroasia Properties Development Corp., and ETON Properties Philippines, Inc.

He is currently an independent director of Belle Corp., Premium Leisure Corp., and Nickel Asia Corp.; and a non-executive director in Cosco Capital, Inc., Philippine Bank of Communications, Alphaland Corp., Airspeed International Corp., and Gothong Southern Shipping Lines, Inc.

In addition, he is the vice chairman of the Philippine Eagle Foundation and a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of the East, the UE Ramon Magsaysay Medical Memorial Center, and the International School of Sustainable Tourism.

Bautista graduated in 1977 from the Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Magna Cum Laude with a decree of Bachelor of Science in Commerce, major in Accounting, and is a Certified Public Accountant. He received his Doctorate in Humanities (Honoris Causa) from the Central Luzon State University in 2018.
