Fewer seaport passengers were recorded during All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day weekend compared to last year, according to the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA).
From October 28 to November 4, passenger traffic at PPA ports reached 1.076 million, 34% lower than the expected 1.622 million, and 30.3% down from the 1.544 million passengers recorded during the same period last year.
PPA in a statement said several factors may contributed to the decrease, such as the longer holiday weekend in 2023 that likely led to an increased number of travelers compared to this year. Additionally, the aftermath of severe tropical storm Kristine—which hit various provinces in the country several days before the Undas week—may have caused some seaport passengers to delay or reschedule their trips.
PPA said its proactive information dissemination and 24/7 communication via social media “also played a key role in keeping the public informed about trip cancellations, port statuses, and updates on the agency’s support for government relief operations.”
It added that early preparations made by the PPA ensured the safe and secure travel experience for passengers.
PPA Port Management Offices (PMOs) that recorded the highest passenger traffic during Undas this year were PMO Bohol with 126,532 passengers, PMO Davao with 123,290, PMO Negros Oriental/Siquijor with 116,087, PMO Batangas with 103,858, and PMO Negros Occidental/Bacolod/Banago/Bredco with 100,194.
