Cebu-based Junida Shipyard recently completed a vessel that is bound for delivery to Papua New Guinea, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) announced.

A blessing ceremony for the newly-built M/V Karkar, a roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) passenger ship, was held on January 29, 2026 in Polambato, Bogo City, Cebu.

MARINA Regional Office VII director Engr. Ronaldo Bandalaria, who led the event, said the vessel stands as a testament to the expanding capabilities of the Philippine shipbuilding and ship repair (SBSR) industry.

Built by Junida Shipyard for Sarangani Engineering Works, M/V Karkar has a gross tonnage of 497 and can accommodate up to 317 passengers.

MARINA said the successful construction and export of M/V Karkar underscore the ability of Filipino shipbuilders to design and build seaworthy vessels that meet international maritime safety and quality standards.

The agency noted that such projects contribute to job generation, skills development, and stronger global confidence in vessels built in the Philippines, key drivers in strengthening the domestic SBSR sector.

In his message, Bandalaria underscored the importance of strict compliance with maritime safety regulations, particularly for vessels operating abroad.

He reaffirmed MARINA’s dedication to supporting shipbuilders and shipowners with policies that emphasize safety, quality, and innovation, aligning with the agency’s goal to strengthen the Philippine maritime industry’s global competitiveness.
