First Gen Corp. received its fifth shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Singapore-based Shell Eastern Trading Pte. Ltd.
The 154,500-cubic-meter cargo, delivered last month, was stored in the BW Batangas floating storage and regasification unit, a specialized vessel at the company’s Batangas facility, First Gen chief revenue officer Vincent Villegas said during the Philippine Natural Gas Investment Summit on November 20.
Villegas noted that the shipment, potentially the last for this year, will supply the company’s four gas-fired power plants at the First Gen Clean Energy Complex in Batangas, which have a combined capacity of over 2,000 megawatts, supplied with Malampaya gas for years.
The Malampaya deep-water gas-to-power project, now operated by Enrique Razon’s Prime Energy Resources Development, remains the country’s sole indigenous gas resource located in offshore Palawan.
Since its initial LNG delivery in Subic in August 2023, First Gen has expanded its operations, with subsequent shipments arriving at its Batangas complex in December 2023, February 2024, and May 2024.
The company has been sourcing LNG through spot purchases but aims to secure long-term contracts.
First Gen chairman and CEO Federico Lopez highlighted the strategic importance of long-term LNG contracts, saying, “You get better terms, and the country will get better terms and prices if you do it that way. I think that’s really where we need to head.”
