The first phase of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension project has reached 97% completion as of January 2024 and is expected to open in the fourth quarter of this year, according to private operator Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC).

“We are optimistic about the progress achieved in the LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1 project,” LRMC president and chief executive officer Juan Alfonso said in a statement.

“This significant milestone is a testament to the perseverance and dedication of our team and our contractors, all working together to make this project come to life connecting countless residents in the south of Metro Manila and nearby provinces,” Alfonso added.

The LRMC said both civil and system works are progressing rapidly to ensure a smooth and timely opening.

The Redemptorist station is 93.3% complete, MIA station 93.5%, Asia World station 83%, Ninoy Aquino station 88%, and Dr. Santos station 94.1%.

The Dr. Santos station has completed staircase and louver installation while the MIA station has finalized its ceiling and is undertaking secondary steelwork. Drainage works have commenced at the Redemptorist station.

Simultaneously, system works are progressing. Telecommunications installation activities at Dr. Santos and Redemptorist stations have been completed, and similar work begun at MIA and Asia World stations.

Beyond construction progress, LRMC said it is actively conducting test runs of various generations of LRT-1 trains, ensuring their compatibility and readiness for operations.

Upon completion, the LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1 will extend the existing line by 6.2 kilometers.

The first phase will connect Baclaran Station in Pasay City to Dr. Santos Station in Parañaque City and is projected to significantly reduce travel time and benefit up to 600,000 passengers daily.
