A nine-hectare container yard in Kawit, Cavite has recently opened to accommodate storage of empty containers going to or coming from the south of Metro Manila.
Depot operator GLY Integrated Container Services said the facility located on Centennial Road, Tramo in Kawit began operations last April.
In an email to PortCalls, GLY said the decision to put up a depot in the area was made to meet “demand coming from various international shipping lines that need to be served by a systematic, process-driven and efficient container yard service.”
The operator said Cavite was chosen for its proximity to the Manila port and the Cavite economic zone. Moreover, “there’s no truck ban being imposed on the major roads leading to the location of the container yard.”
The immediate target is to utilize five hectares, or 55% of the facility’s total storage area, once pavement work is completed before year-end, said GLY.
The facility can accommodate 4,200 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) with floor stacking and 25,200 TEUs with six-high stacking.
It is equipped with a side loader; there are plans to acquire another side loader and a reach stacker to accommodate expected demand for laden containers. In-house trucks and chassis are also available.
Currently, GLY serves Maersk Filipinas Inc. and is working to cater to shipping lines based in mainland China, Japan, France and Taiwan.
Services include storage of laden containers with chassis; repair and maintenance of facilities; pre-trip inspection of reefer containers; hustling and plug-in services; and modification of garment-on-hanger and ISO tank services.
The depot’s container repair service is based on CIC (Common Interchange Criteria) and IICL (Institute of International Container Lessors) standards “to ensure the highest container repair workmanship standards that we can provide,” the company said.
The facility uses a container yard management system that enables easy monitoring of each container.
The depot is open from Mondays to Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 midnight. Requests outside of standard operating hours may be accommodated as long as there is advance notice. – Roumina Pablo
