Marine service provider Harbor Star Shipping Services, Inc. (HSSSI) has been awarded the P118-million contract to provide two specialized barges for use in the construction of the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway in Cebu.

HSSSI in a regulatory disclosure said it received on May 25 the notice of award from Cebu Link Joint Venture (CLJV)—a joint venture of Spain-based Acciona Construccion S. A. and Philippine-based First Balfour Inc. and D.M. Consunji Inc. CLJV is the main contractor for the 8.5-kilometer bridge that will connect Cebu City to the Municipality of Cordova on the island of Mactan.

CLJV early this year signed a contract with Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) and subsidiary Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway Corporation (CCLEC) to design and construct the project, to be called the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX).

Operational by 2021, CCLEX will link Cebu City from South Road Properties to Barangay Pilipog in Cordova, and to further spark economic growth and productivity not only in Cebu but in the entire Region 7.

CCLEC will build, operate, and maintain the toll bridge through a joint venture agreement with the local governments of Cebu City and Cordova Municipality.

CCLEX will have two lanes on each direction, and feature a main navigation span bridge that allows for shipping traffic, as well as viaduct approach bridges, a causeway, a roadway, and toll facilities. The link will serve at least 40,000 vehicles daily, and give Cordova direct access to Cebu City, decongesting traffic on two bridges between Mactan and Cebu.
