HMM welcomed the delivery of HMM Garnet, the first of a dozen 13,000 twenty-equivalent unit (TEU) eco-friendly containerships, as part of the South Korean company’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

The naming ceremony took place at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries headquarters in Ulsan, South Korea.

HMM said it is focused on the use of LNG-ready ships with advanced energy-saving technologies for increased fuel efficiency and reduced pollutant emissions.

The 12 vessels are named after birthstones from January to December, embodying the company’s commitment to treating customers’ cargo as valuable as jewelry, HMM said in a statement.

In June 2021, the South Korean shipping company formalized a contract with Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to construct twelve 13,000-TEU containerships, with HMM Garnet being the first to join the fleet.

The vessels are equipped with the latest smart ship solution, ensuring real-time transmission of operational data to HMM’s Fleet Control Center for comprehensive visibility over the ships.

Kim Kyung Bae, president and CEO of HMM, highlighted the significance of the new ships, anticipating strengthened environmental credentials and increased capacity to face global market competition.

HMM Garnet is set to commence service on the East Coast 1 route, following THE Alliance’s product plan, with port rotations covering Kaohsiung, Xiamen, Yantian, Shanghai, Ningbo, Busan, Yantian, New York, Norfolk, Charleston, Savannah, and Singapore.

With delivery of the remaining eleven 13,000-TEU ships scheduled throughout the year, HMM’s total fleet capacity is expected to reach 1 million TEUs. Notably, vessels with a capacity exceeding 10,000 TEU will comprise 80% of HMM’s entire fleet, contributing to an improved cost structure and operational efficiency.

The latest containership delivery signals a strategic move by HMM to not only expand its fleet but also set new standards in eco-friendly shipping practices, the company said.
