The new quay cranes of Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT), International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s (ICTSI) operation in Croatia, are scheduled to be deployed and be fully operational by the end of the year.
Manufactured by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd., the cranes are the first units of the latest generation of super post-Panamax quay cranes, ICTSI said.
The cranes are specifically engineered to meet AGCT’s operational requirements, which include custom load-bearing adjustments. With an outreach of 67.5 meters, equivalent to 24 rows across, ICTSI said the cranes will enable AGCT to handle the largest container vessels operating in today’s global fleet.
Currently, the cranes are undergoing commissioning and technical testing with deployment and full operations by the end of the year.
The new equipment were formally presented to industry partners, shipping line representatives, freight forwarders, rail operators, other stakeholders in the Rijeka transport corridor, and representatives of the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, customs, regional and local authorities on December 11.
“The acquisition of these new cranes is an important first step in the continued modernization of our terminal. This latest generation of equipment will enable increased capacity, faster and more efficient cargo handling, and full readiness for the largest container vessels in the Mediterranean and Adriatic,” AGCT chief executive officer Emmanuel Papagiannakis said.
The quay cranes are part of AGCT’s broader modernization program, along with two new hybrid rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes that are set to arrive in the coming weeks.
The RTGs’ hybrid drive system will reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, supporting AGCT’s sustainability goals.
Papagiannakis added: “Together with the upcoming hybrid RTG cranes and their reduced emissions, we continue to strategically invest in developing and expanding the terminal, as well as in strengthening the Rijeka transport corridor as a key gateway for Central and Southeast European markets.”
In March 2011, ICTSI forged a 30-year strategic partnership with Luka Rijeka D.D. for the operation, management, and development of AGCT at the Port of Rijeka, Croatia’s main seaport.
