Contecon Guayaquil S.A. de C.V. (CGSA), International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s (ICTSI) Ecuadorian business unit, has launched a cold storage facility within the Port of Guayaquil to support Ecuador’s banana export capabilities.

The Guayaquil Banana Gateway is the first on-dock cold storage facility in the country, which remains as the world’s top banana exporter, ICTSI said in a statement.

Developed in partnership with specialized reefer vessel operator Cool Carriers, ICTSI said the facility ensures uninterrupted cold chain preservation from cargo reception to shipment leading to reduced waiting times, optimized processes and a guarantee that the fruits reach their destinations in the best possible condition.

“Our cold storage facility not only transforms the way we export but also sets a new standard in the logistics industry,” CGSA chief executive officer Javier Lancha said.

“We will continue driving Ecuador to be synonymous with excellence in fresh produce exports,” Lancha added.

In a separate statement, Cool Carriers said the facility will store perishable products requiring refrigeration prior to loading as part of Cool Carriers’ exclusive premium service.

ICTSI said the latest investment reflects CGSA’s commitment to innovation and first-rate customer service, reinforcing its leadership in the local port logistics sector and Ecuador’s position as a benchmark for quality in Latin America.

ICTSI in March 2007 was awarded by the port authority of Guayaquil, Autoridad Portuario de Guayaquil (APG), a 20-year operating concession for the Container and Multipurpose Terminals in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Later in May, a contract was formally signed between APG and CGSA, ICTSI’s local operating unit. The terminal handles containerized, general and bulk cargo.
