IRS Eastern Inc. and Carrier Transicold have launched an all-electric truck refrigeration unit (TRU) – the first of its kind in the Philippines – to address demand for more sustainable solutions in the cold chain industry.
The launch of Carrier Transicold’s Pulsor eCool series in the Philippines is a “bold step toward a more sustainable, efficient, and future ready cold chain industry,” IRS Eastern president Eric Fulgencio said in a speech during the launch on June 17.
“As the demand for cleaner, smarter logistics grows, we are committed to leading the way with the innovation that not only meets our customers’ needs, but also supports the country’s journey towards greener transport solutions,” Fulgencio added.
IRS Eastern, which specializes in truck refrigeration and reefer container services in the Philippines, is the exclusive distributor of Carrier Transicold in the country.
Carrier Transicold, a part of the Carrier Global Corp., provides land transport refrigeration solutions. Specifically, Carrier Transicold’s Pulsor 6 model under the eCool series is now available in the Philippine market through IRS Eastern.
The Pulsor 6 is a fully-electric TRU under the eCool series that is designed to use the high-voltage direct current generated by the batteries powering an electric light- and medium-duty commercial vehicle.
Because it does not require an additional battery pack or a voltage converter, Pulsor eCool can be a cost-effective and powerful plug-and-play solution for last-mile delivery applications.
In a presentation during the launch, Carrier Shanghai product marketing manager Damon Sun said Pulsor 6 has sufficient cooling and heating capacity with a wide ambient operating temperature of -30℃ to -50℃.
It also has a fast pulldown speed and can lower the temperature from 30℃ to -18℃ within 50 minutes.
Using its eco mode – one of the four cooling modes of Pulsor 6–energy savings can reach up to 32%.
Pulsor 6 also uses the Intellitrix intelligent controller and can be linked to Carrier’s Lynx digital platform, which allows monitoring of connected refrigeration systems and provides vital information and improved visibility during transportation.
In an interview with PortCalls at the sidelines of the launch, IRS Eastern general manager Adrian Azurin said there are already a number of electric vehicle (EV) providers that can be tapped for Pulsor 6.
Currently, IRS Eastern can do the assembly of Pulsor 6 to an EV at its Bulacan plant and also has service areas in Manila, Cebu, and Davao. The service also includes training of drivers and after sales.
Aside from the advantages of Pulsor 6, Azurin said the use of EVs entail cost savings, less maintenance, and longer retention of drivers since EVs are easier and more comfortable to drive.
Azurin said EVs are actually designed for city traffic as they consume less power compared with internal combustion engines that still consume gas or diesel even when the vehicle is idle during traffic.
There are EV truck dealers that can provide portable charging or battery swapping in case an EV runs out of battery power during a trip. Azurin noted, however, that this can be avoided just by proper planning of trips. – Roumina Pablo
