Japan has lifted the ban on strawberry exports to the Philippines last week.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) implemented the ban due to concern over pests associated with fresh strawberries from Japan.

Japanese ambassador to the Philippines Kazuya Endo posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Big news for strawberry lovers! Starting Dec. 15, Japan’s juicy & sweet strawberries will finally make their way from Japan to the Philippines! Thanks to the agreement between MAFF & Philippine authorities, these berry-delicious exports are good to go! Who’s excited for this fruity milestone?”

The Japanese embassy in Manila said in a social media post that the previous restriction was implemented due to concerns over pests associated with fresh strawberries from Japan. In response, the MAFF engaged in extensive technical discussions with Philippine quarantine authorities, driven by requests from Japanese production areas.

Japanese strawberries are said to be sweeter and more tender than US or Philippine strawberries, with less acidity.

Instead of growing on soil, Japanese farmers use vertical farming, where berries are grown indoors.
