Jardine Shipping Services Philippines, Inc is enjoying brisk trade in Asia.

“Trade in the United States and in Europe is weak, but we found lots of opportunities in Asia,” Jardine Shipping Services Philippines, Inc general manager Rene Vargas told PortCalls.

No specific Asian countries were identified.

Vargas said the company felt the full impact of the global economic crisis in the first quarter, but that the situation progressively got better in the second quarter.

He attributed the positive performance partly to the company’s many principals, including Malaysian International Shipping Corp, United Arab Shipping, Pendulum Express Lines, Compania Chilean De Navigation Interoceanica SA, Shipping Corporation of India, and Star Liner Asia.

He said the company is eyeing new service routes. “Apart from getting new clients, we’re looking for developments, and we’re thinking of new business ventures,” Vargas said.

In the meantime, Jardine Shipping’s focus is on debt management and maximizing information technology capability to help cut costs. Lay-offs have so far been avoided.
