Tanjung PelepasMany foreign and local companies are showing keen interest in providing port services in Johor, one of the most developed states in Malaysia, in view of government plans to expand its cargo capacity from 40 million tonnes to 100 million tonnes in 10 years’ time.

Johor Port Authority general manager Muhammad Razif Ahmad said there is a need for Johor, located in the southern portion of Peninsular Malaysia, to enlarge its port capacity due to the fast development in the area, particularly to serve the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC).

He said the PIPC will provide ample opportunities for port operators to widen their services in Johor, according to a report from Bernama, Malaysia’s national news agency.

“As a whole, Johor needs to extend the length of its wharf to more than 70 kilometers. Hence, port operators should pursue this opportunity,” he said, as quoted by Bernama.

He declined to name the prospective port-operating companies and the sites identified.

Currently, the Tanjung Pelepas Port has 14 wharves, the Langsat Terminal five, Johor Port 13, and Pengerang six.

Muhammad Razif said Pengerang will have two private jetties to be operated by Dialog Berhad and Petronas, respectively. Dialog is building a deepwater oil and gas storage terminal, while Petronas is spearheading the development.
