Mactan-Cebu air cargo volume soared 18.57% in Jan-Oct 2024

Cargo volume at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) soared 18.57% in the first 10 months of 2024 from the same period in 2023.

MCIA handled 55.506 million kilograms (kg) of air cargo from January to October 2024, up from 46.813 million kg in the same period last year, based on data from regulator Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority.

Domestic cargoes, which accounted for 65% of the total, grew 12.14% to 36.004 million kg from 32.106 million kg.

Foreign cargoes likewise soared 32.6% to 19.502 million kg from 14.707 million kg.

Flights at the country’s second-busiest gateway increased 9.1% to 80,738 in January-October 2024 from 73,975 flights recorded in the same period in 2023.

Domestic flights grew 9.2% to 65,919 flights while foreign flights rose 8.8% to 14,819 flights.

Passenger traffic climbed 11.3% to 9.230 million from 8.296 million.

Anthanasios Titonis, chief executive officer of MCIA private operator Aboitiz InfraCapital GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corp., earlier said passenger traffic at the Cebu gateway is expected to hit pre-pandemic levels of around 12 million this year and 20% higher than the 10.032 million passengers in 2023. – Roumina Pablo
